Wightsands and Appleysands are situated on the outskirts of the seaside town of Ryde. Here are a number of locations that you’re likely to see when you visit:
This quiet leafy lane winds its way down to the beach, just 350 metres from your home.
This large, sandy beach is the only one on the Island to be cleaned every morning in the summer season. Inshore Rescue are stationed here so beach sea safety is catered for as well. Public toilets are also nearby.
The beach is overlooked by an old folly tower. One of the many historic structures on the Island.
Explore the sandbanks and shallow pools that the children will love to splash through. Find a crab or shrimps but they won’t be big enough for tea I’m afraid!
Safe, enclosed play park with sandpits to play in directly behind the beach. Lots of child safe play apparatus to keep the little ones entertained while you relax on the grassy areas or enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic tables! You can spend all day here…and its free!
Ryde to Seaview sea wall walk passes through Appley. Toilet facilities en route as you pass by Appley Woods heading towards Puckpool recreation area. Here you can play tennis, crazy golf, enjoy a meal from Puka Pizza café or explore the old second world war gunnery emplacements. A great play park is situated here too, which caters for both younger and older children.
There are a selection of beach side cafes to tempt you as you stroll along the sea front. This is the nearest one to Wightsands and is well worth a visit. It has a sea food restaurant above, and often hosts special events during the summer.
Children can enjoy getting wet even on the warmest, sunniest day as they play in this little water park.
Take some bread with you and feed the ducks and swans on the boating lake. You can even ride on one, a purpose built pedalo that is, not the feathered variety!
If there are sea monsters about then use the swimming pool instead! In the morning there is lane swimming, and during some afternoons the inflatables come out. It also has a retractable roof.
Try your hand at bowling, especially if the weather is unsettled. With 22 Lanes there’s plenty of room for everyone, and also a Café to celebrate your ‘strikes’ in.
All the Fun of the Fair at Peter Pans Funfair. Designed to get childrens hearts racing as they ride the bumper cars, slide down the heltor skeltor, wizz about on the water boats or get dizzy on the merry-go-round.
When all the fun of the fair has been enjoyed, relax a little on the beach here. If the children still have energy to burn then this little beach play park will help to tire them for the evening.
The hovercraft operates even when the tides out. This might surprise the little ‘uns. That is Ryde Pier in the background.
In Union High Street shops are only a stones throw from the beach.

Hopefully you have been able to get an idea of the many interesting places near both of our holiday homes, all of which are within walking distance. You may also have noticed that these photos have been taken when the tide was a long way from the shore. Don’t worry! it will spend plenty of time close to the sandy beach as well – you can have a lot of fun as it comes in.
